Impact of Project Results

Foundation of WSN Start-Up Company

Particle Computer was founded in September 2005 with the goal of delivering customized solutions based on wireless sensor network technology. The company headquartered in Karlsruhe (Germany) is a spin-off from TecO (a department of University of Karlsruhe) and from SAP Research, both CoBIs project partners.

Wireless sensor networks are envisioned as the next tier of the internet. Ongoing trends in regards to computing and communication capability allow wireless sensors to form mesh networks and become extensions of the enterprise system with the ultimate goal to overcome today’s divide between what happens in the physical world and its representation in the digital world. Particle technology enables the fine-grained monitoring of industrial resources in order to maximize their utilization and increase their performance.

The potential of the technology has been demonstrated in the CoBIs project, in which Particles were attached to drums containing hazardous chemical substances to monitor and control among other rules that dangerous combinations while storing chemicals in warehouses could not happen. To achieve this goal, a trial with more than 50 Particles took place in a refinery from BP in Hull (UK). The experiences gained during the CoBIs project paved the way to the successful foundation of the company.

Particle Computer has won several prizes. One of them is an award by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology as a flagship project from the High Tech Gründerfonds for its revolutionary technology.
